SEO What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) ?

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is all about raising the profile of your website’s pages and ultimately your business in unpaid search results. These are often referred to as  ‘natural’ or ‘organic’  results found on search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing. These are the ones that don’t have “AD” written next to them and arent paid for.

Search engine robots or SEO bots, go out in to the internet and crawl around picking up information about what they find and then sending it back to be catalogued and indexed in very clever ways. These clever ways are aimed at finding websites that are interesting, authoritative and have useful information that people want to know.

However they wont know you are there if you don’t let them know or are not linked to from other web pages. They wont look on you as favorably if your website hasn’t been optimised to give you the best chance of appearing in a search results page. This doesn’t just mean words and content on a page, it means a load of other things too such as the platform it sits on, does it work on mobile devices and are you appearing on social media.

Build it and they will come may work in the movies but in the real world it just doesn’t happen!

Using search engines are the way to get traffic to your website, the notion of “build it and they will come” may work in the movies but in the real world it just doesn’t happen. Most people who want to find a product or service will Google something, see its even used in normal language.

It is important that your website is optimised to make the most this powerful chance to get seen. Your digital marketing strategy should always include SEO, if you don’t you could potentially lose out on business that you would otherwise never have reached.

At the end of the day the search engines want to serve up the best content it can provide,  that is why people use them. So it puts weight on quality, efficiency, interest and authority (there are others factors too!)

What does SEO mean for my business?

Simply put, if you want to be seen, you need to be out there and noticed. Your website needs to be the one people come to for answers or information. Your information needs to be written so that it answers the questions or terms that are asked for and in your site.

Not thinking about search engine optimisation is the difference in appearing on the first page of results or 40th page of results. If your competitor is on page 1 and you are on page 40 where do you think prospective clients will go?

Imagine you are the ideal customer, would your current website content answer your questions right now?
